License Exams

FCC license examinations are administered by authorized members of the ARRL VEC program.  Three examiners must be present at each testing session.  Exams for the Technician (35 questions), General (35 questions), and Extra-class exams (50 questions) are given at the same time in the same place.  Scoring is done on the spot, and the passing score is 74%.  It takes a few days for exam results to be entered directly online into the FCC database.  Once your name and call sign appear there, you are authorized to transmit on the bands or portions of bands appropriate to your license class.  For ARRL’s detailed guide on taking the exams, click here.

Thanx for having this information posted, it makes it easy for me to plan a test date; well done.

Sure would be nice if they could post the exam sessions on the ARRL site ! Due to the fact that is where most people go to look for an exam… It took me a while to finally find the exam dates on this clubs web page. I think it would be good to post them on ARRL under Exams as well !

  • Mike

Hi, Todd! I went to the link you provided for the ARRL exams that you posted above. There is not 1 exam out of your page of license exams that is posted with the ARRL ! You cannot find 1 of the license-exams that is posted on the w7dta license-exams page that is posted with the ARRL ! It would be helpful to take a little effort as VE’s to post the exam dates on the ARRL’s site ! Maybe that is why there are so many questions as stated above in another comment ! Sorry they are just not there ! Please post exams with the ARRL… The link does nothing if there is NO info posted once one gets there ! 73 !

Mike–If you go back to the ARRL link and select “Oregon” for the state, it will bring back five pages of results, with Bend, Grants Pass, and our local dates listed for the remainder of 2014. You can also search by zip code (e.g., 97501) and select a mileage radius to include. Notice you can’t search by club name. Technically, the exams aren’t offered by clubs, but by VE’s authorized by their VEC; in the case of the local examiners, that’s ARRL. If you try to search by city, the ARRL site will look for the city in which the exam is held. In the local case, that would be Phoenix. Medford will bring back no results. That’s why the zip-code/radius approach is best. –Todd K7TFC
